The Lakota, a name that means “feeling affection, friendly, united, allied”, are a Native American tribe. They are the western-most of the three Sioux-language groups and occupy lands in North and South Dakota. The tribe is notable for its members Sitting Bull of the Hunk papa band and Crazy Horse of the Oglala band, who led their people during years of resistance to United States government policies. Legally and by treaty they are a semi-autonomous “nation” within the United States. In 2007, the Lakota Nation withdrew from all treaties with the United States in a decision to declare their sovereignty and independence. Following their formal secession, the free and independent Nation of Lakota launched the Free Lakota Bank in 2008. The Lakota have been using their own coins since 2008. Across the great Lakota land, thousands of communities and merchants participate in their system of trade. The Lakota leadership claims to use their new monetary system to help restore wealth and prosperity to their people. |
